Hello everyone,
I’m highly interested in becoming an Inside Wireman Apprentice, but I have a few questions before I dive in. For context, I have zero prior experience in the trades.
Since the Inside program is known to be very competitive, I’ve heard that many people get their foot in the door by starting as a Residential Trainee first. I have a couple of concerns regarding this path:
- Pay Scale: I’m looking at Local 26 (Lanham, MD), and I saw that the starting pay for a Residential Trainee is listed at $13.60. This is actually lower than the current state minimum wage. Is this figure accurate, or am I missing something (like fringe benefits or a recent update)?
- Transitioning: What is the day-to-day work like for an RT? Also, is it realistic to expect a transfer into the Inside Wireman Apprenticeship after a few months, or is there a specific waiting period/process I should be aware of?
I’d appreciate any insight from those who started in Residential or anyone familiar with Local 26’s specific procedures. Thanks in advance!
