I’ve got a £25k–£30k budget and was set on getting a Porsche Cayman S (981 or possibly stretching to a 718) as a daily. For me it's the sensible choice – usable, reliable, still a dream for me and I wouldn’t need a second car.
But my situation has changed considerably since I started looking. I’m now staying at home for another two years instead of buying a house, which frees things up financially.
I've just about convinced myself this is the perfect window in life to own something a bit ridiculous.
I’ve always loved the gen 1 Audi R8. It’s been a dream car since I watched Iron Man as a kid. I’m wondering if this is one of those “you’ll regret not doing it” moments.
Plan would be:
- Keep my current Mk7 Golf GTI as the commuter (it’s on moon miles but still going for now)
- Use the R8 as a weekend/ occasional use car.
- Do a lot of maintenance myself and with my mechanic mate to keep costs down (I work in the trade)
- Possibly sell the R8 when I'm ready to buy the house as value really shouldn't drop much more if at all.
The right Porsche hasn't come up for me yet and I've been to see a few.
What do you other car people think?
