First C-Race win. +89 Race score!

Edit: nvm looks like my competition was mostly D group even though I was within the racing score bracket. Well new score should fix that haha

In my last post, I made a comment that despite pushing a higher W/kg than anyone else in the race, I came in 12th. The advice I received was to take advantage of my weight (54kg). So I did!

I was in the lead group at the start but I noticed that despite sitting in the draft, I was still pushing a much higher w/kg than any other rider just to keep up with them on the flats and declines. It wasn’t a high effort, but I knew that if I stayed with them, I would be at a disadvantage if it came to a sprint.

So early in the race—on the first hill—I decided to break away. Even if I couldn’t maintain it, I figured I’d wear the other riders down a bit. Some people tried to push about 4.5-5w/kg to close the gap but didn’t make an effort for long. I was doing maybe 6-7 w/kg. I imagine they reasonably assumed it would be unsustainable. At the top of the hill, I had about an 8 second gap and that grew to the 40ish second-finishing lead.

What I struggle with however, is that I still don’t know when I’m able to rest as a light rider. I have to push on the uphill because that’s the only advantage I have, but then I also have to push on the flats and declines because if I don’t, heavier riders will effortlessly catch up to me. In this race, once I had a 30-second gap, I began to take it easy. But I still had a 3.1 w/kg average. Significantly higher than anyone else in the race. Whats the deal. Pls help. Thanks!

My first ride was March 21. I’ve just gotten to the point where my sit bones aren’t sore from every ride. I’m certainly no world-class athlete, but I am a relatively healthy 26 year old male with an above-average fitness level due to highschool cross country and military service.

And yet, people double my age are pushing 200+ watts in zone 2. That’s 23% higher than my current FTP of 163.

I know I’m very new to this and don’t expect to be [famous cyclist] any time soon, i just want to know approximately how long it took some of you guys to go from beginner to A group, for example. Would be especially interested to hear from those around my age and weight (54kg, 120lbs).

Since March 21 I’ve gotten in 274 miles.
