how do you decide what to build when you don't know what people actually want

been stuck on this for a while and wanted to hear how others think about it.

when i make something, i mostly make stuff i personally find interesting. it's how i stay motivated. but lately i've been wondering if that's a mistake.

the thing is, i don't really know if "people like me" exist in large enough numbers to make this work. i could spend months building something only to find out maybe 20 people in the whole world actually want it.

the alternative seems to be doing a lot of upfront user research, finding what people are missing, then building for that. probably safer. but i'm not sure i'd enjoy the process the same way.

curious how you've thought about this — do you build what excites you and hope it lands, or do you try to figure out what people want first?

not sure there's a right answer, just want to see how others have made peace with it.

I Used the iPhone’s Vibration Motor to Calm Anxiety

Had a random thought yesterday:

when anxiety kicks in, it’s actually really hard to “think” your way out of it. 🤚

Then I remembered this psychology concept called entrainment — humans naturally sync to external rhythms.
Breathing, heartbeat, even subtle repetitive touch can slowly calm the nervous system.

That made me think:

the iPhone’s haptic engine is insanely precise…
what if it could mimic a heartbeat? 💗

Fast at first, then gradually slowing down, almost like guiding your body into a calmer state.

So I stayed up and built a quick prototype.

Tried it myself with my eyes closed and…
wow, it genuinely helped more than I expected.

Ended up turning it into a real app.

If your brain ever feels like it just won’t stop racing, maybe this might help a little too.

Yesterday I suddenly had this idea — what if you used the iPhone’s haptic engine to simulate a heartbeat, starting fast and gradually slowing down, while imagining your own heartbeat syncing with it? Maybe it could help calm anxiety really quickly.

So I hacked together a quick demo, closed my eyes, and tried it myself. Surprisingly… it actually worked really well.

I’ve decided to release it. If you ever need something like this, maybe give it a try.

I accidentally built something for myself that I didn’t realize I needed.

It sends me one letter a day from a “world far away”.

No notifications spam, no chat, no pressure to reply.

Just… a letter.

Some days it’s about their world.

Some days it’s about me.

Sometimes it barely says anything.

But weirdly, it feels like someone remembers I existed that day.

I didn’t want to make another chat app or productivity tool.

I wanted something quieter.

It’s still early, but I’d really love to know if this resonates with anyone else.
