Is a Minor in Photography Worth It?
TLDR ; Is the cost of uni photography classes worth it, even if I don't plan on becoming a professional photographer?
Hello!
I'm a CÉGEP student in Montreal. CÉGEP is basically a halfway point between university and high school, where young adults can explore a diversity of classes at a lower cost than university.
I'm studying in Liberal Arts, but I recently took an intro to Photography class as an elective. I really like learning about different technical elements, and I enjoy doing critiques in a class setting. My teacher thinks I'm quite good, she encourages me to submit my work to scholarships. She told me that I should do 'at least' a minor in photography. This wasn't in my original career plan, I do not wish to become a professional photographer, I want to be an archivist.
That being said, what I study for my bachelor's doesn't really matter that much, as a Master's would be what allows me to become a bona fide archivist. For this reason, I am considering taking a minor in photography while I major in history.
Uni is expensive though, so I want to know what I'm getting into. I haven't heard of anyone following a plan similar to mine, and that uncertainty scares me. I will keep taking pictures regardless, but I want to know if anyone considers the skills learned through university photography courses to be worth the cost.
Does anyone who has majored or minored in photography recommend/regret studying it at a university level?
Thank you!
