I recently launched my app and thought I would be cruising at a mid level, I carefully tried to price my sub at what most apps in my niche were doing. Actually less, and I think my app offers more value and functionality. one week trial then your sub starts a $x per year, with option for monthly.
But there was a lot of aggressive "Why is there a paywall? / Why isn't it free?" type comments. And while I understand the subscription fatigue, I just sort of assumed that people were used to it in 2026. I don't think there are any models that don't do subs now.
I know that there isn't a one size fits all for every app and A/B testing is the only way to know for sure. But I have a pretty good idea from the other apps that sub is probably the route I should take.
I'm willing to adjust to feedback and I the last thing I want to be doing is arguing with potential customers in the exact subs I'm trying to market to.
My knee-jerk reaction was to build out a full free tier to appease those type of users. But then in the back of my head I'm thinking, Is that just the vocal minority? If I push this free tier then maybe its enough functionality to actually harm conversion because its enough by itself.
How do you deal with this balancing act? Should I just keep prices super cheap at first to get some traction?
This is Cymata for iOS and TVOS apple devices.
I got tired of watching my TV do nothing when I listen to apple music through my apple TV and the sound system, so I built this app.
Cymata runs independently on apple TV or iphone/ipad, or you can use your device to control apple TV with Cymata Link like in this video.
You can play music from any source, the app has a built in player for apple music, Soundcloud and internet radio. But you can use it with whatever source you have on your device or even live music.
Its free to try, I would love to get some people to try it out and let me know what you think!
