Edit to add: There's a double set of doors. Usually one teacher will be at the first set which connects to the U-Drive. Through those doors is a foyer that connects to the office and the second set of doors. The second set of doors connects to the rotunda where students are sitting on the floor and that door is kept closed until teacher from the pickup door calls out for students by name and teacher. "Can I get Larry from Mrs.Smith's class" There's teachers stationed at the inner doors at all times so no student can accidentally wander. Students are then handed off from inner doors to outer doors but they always call back the name of the child to make sure parent is actually present for pickup. "You said Larry from Mrs.Smith's?" if child is incorrectly called they are escorted back into the rotunda. (At least this is what I've witnessed)

Hi everyone!

Background: my child is 4 years old, his preschool does not allow parents within the building for drop off or pickup so I walk him to/from the door and teachers/aids will direct him on where he needs to go.

Earlier today, I was in the pickup line. Pickup starts around 2:45pm, his teacher gets the class there around 2:55pm/3pm; so I decided to just sit in my car until then. I was talking with my husband and then looked at the door to see if anyone was coming out. His teacher was there at the door handing off kids, I wasn't fully paying attention since I was about to open my car door but then out the corner of my eye I saw my son. I told my husband "omg they let him out without anyone there" I ran out of the car and dashed to my son who looked lost and was walking around. Pickup area is super small and there's two lanes in a U-Drive.

I grabbed him and started walking to the car flustered. My husband hopped out and confronted his teacher. They pulled us inside and his teacher apologized and said to my son "buddy you're supposed to wait, he was waiting at the door but I guess stepped out" she said there was supposed to be another teacher with her when handing off the kids but they somehow disappeared. My husband went to speak with them again but the principal stepped in and said she would supervise pickup now that this happened. No one could tell us who was the so-called teacher who let him out. But my son said it was his teacher.

My son usually needs to be led out since they don't know how to pronounce his name, so he doesn't get up right away when they call his name. So someone held his hand and released him to the street essentially. I'm not sure how this happened. In the moment, the shock kind of got to me but now I can't help but nitpick the situation and feel like it needs to be escalated somehow?

Am I overreacting? What would be appropriate in terms of escalation?
