Letter to the developers regarding the AI topic
Hey everybody,
long time lurker first time poster here. All of you have probably already seen the recent news regarding the AI job posting. I don't intend to start yet another endless discussion on this topic. As a long time fan of Lies of P the only reasonable action I myself see is giving the developers my personal feedback on the subject. I don't expect much to come of this regarding the current day and age we are in but you never know. If you care about the direction of a future LoP entry I’d like to ask you to take the time out of your day and share your thoughts and experience with the game with the developers via the online customer contact on the official Neowiz website. I hope this kind of post is in line with this subreddits rules. If not feel free to delete. My personal message below:
Dear Neowiz,
dear Round8 Studio,
let me start by briefly introducing myself. My name is Johannes, I am from Germany and I'm a major Lies of P fan. I stumbled upon this game in November of 2023 and by the time I received the first record "Feel" I knew that this game would go on to be something really special. Playing as P on his quest to become human deeply resonated with me, so I went on to recommend this game to my friends and colleagues. Fast forward 2,5 years and Lies of P and it's expansion Overture are my favourite game and something that I hold very dearly. Furthermore the game as well as the entire community helped me through some tough times, so every time I feel burn-out or depressed I put on the soundtrack to relax (my two favourites being Shadow Flower & Overture).
The reason I feel obliged to contact you today is your newly listed job offering regarding an "AI Creator" particularly for art creation. This unfortunate development has already started at fiery discussion in the larger community and I myself am deeply saddened by this decision, because it not only tarnishes the up until now flawless perception of Lies of P and the people responsible for its outstanding success, but also goes completely against what I myself took as the core philosophy of the first game.
Lies of P shined like a beacon of hope among so many other identical games because of the passion that everybody that worked on it, put into every aspect of it.
From the rich world design and tragic characters to the stunning soundtrack and voice acting everything feels lively and authentic.
The reason I and many others enjoyed Lies of P so much is the attention to love and detail put into every part of the game.I firmly believe that by working on something you truly care about you also put a piece of yourself in the final product. A level of detail that will never be matched by artificially generated assets, because how could it ever. What does a machine algorithm know about the human experience, what it means to feel if it lacks a soul to begin with? That is the reason why everything created by some LLM feels soulless and uninspired, because how could it not. The moment you take a second glance at the output it falls apart, because while AI might be good at mimicking what it's built upon it simply has no deeper understanding of it.
How am I as a player supposed to care about a world that you didn't care enough about to build by yourself? After all, video games are not just another product to be consumed and tossed aside but a genuine piece of art that conveys an experience like few other mediums can. I understand the economic and competitive pressure to stay up to date on the newest technologies but in my opinion you should never compromise your quality for the sake of quantity.
If you took the time out of your day to read my thoughts I wholeheartedly thank you and hope this can influence the development of a Lies of P Sequel for the better.
Yours faithfully
Johannes
