I think my son might have ARFID but how do I know for sure?
Hi everyone. My son is almost 7 years old and has struggled with food for as long as I can remember. The most notable thing about him is he refuses to try new foods. He will cry hysterically if I ask him to try something, the tiniest tiniest bite of it. This pertains to things like vegetables, fruit, meat, beans. He will usually taste things like chips or candy, etc. There is not one vegetable he will eat. Not one. He will not even TRY them. He used to eat raw carrots (NEVER cooked) as long as he had guacamole with it, but a few months ago he decided he doesn't like raw carrots anymore. He has done this a few times; he will like a food for a while then seemingly out of nowhere he says he no longer likes it. He used to like chicken and beans but he won't eat those anymore. Those are just a few examples I can think of off the top of my head. He will only eat a handful of things. We eat the same dinners every week because it's the only things he will eat, and even then he will usually only eat some parts of the dinner. A lot of people around me are telling me I'm not strict enough. "If he's hungry enough he will eat." Saying that I'm enabling him because I offer things he likes because I don't want him to go to bed hungry. I know most of you are probably not psychologists but I figure the best group of people to ask is people who struggle with this disorder. How do I know if this is ARFID and not just picky eating? For what it's worth he also is diagnosed with ADHD and we are like 99% sure he has autism but it's so difficult to find someone to actually diagnose it in my area.
