I’m about to be a summer associate at a NYC big law firm. Recently, the firm sent us an email with some logistics including the dress code, which is business casual and explicitly said “you’re welcome to wear jeans on Fridays.”

I’ve been told that summer associates need to err on the conservative side fashion-wise, especially in NYC. So to me, it seems like it might be a really bad idea to wear jeans on a Friday even if the dress code technically allows it. I’d really hate to be the only summer associate who actually showed up in jeans on the first friday lol. But then again, who knows, maybe almost everyone wears jeans on fridays at this firm and I’ll stand out if I don’t. Obviously I don’t plan on wearing a full suit either except on the first day lol, but will I look weird or prude-ish if I just opt to never wear jeans?
