I initially made this following 1181's release, but Reddit filters blocked it. It still holds some relevance to the story currently so here is a repost!

There has been much debate over whether or not Mihawk's title remains valid after Imu's appearance. Here is my take on it. For reference, I am not a member of the agenda of either Mihawk or Shanks, as this debate as roared up since 1181's raws have been released.

I am simply going to lay all of the evidence out on the table and see what you all think.

Slide 1 demonstrates the definition of a swordsman (credit: merriam-webster.com) as someone who is skilled in swordplay.

The following slides are an exhibit of Imu's performance from 1179 through to 1181. Initially when we see Imu (Slide 2), he is wielding a polearm, which is not a sword. He goes on to transform his weapon into a mace (Slide 8) in order to clash with Ragnir. But then, Imu transforms the weapon into a sword and pierces Loki through the chest in a move known as "Nemesis" (Slide 4). This clearly demonstrates a level of skill that Imu has with a sword. He then goes on to use the weapon as a flail, before transforming it back into its original polearm form. This creates the implication that the polearm is the base form of the weapon, and hence is Imu's primary weapon of use.

Historically, polearms were used on battlefields as a primary weapon for post-classical battles across Asia and Europe (source Wikipedia: polearm). Special bladed polearms such as halberds and poleaxes were common in the 14th to 16th centuries.

The link to the post below seems rather helpful in this instance too, as in Japanese militial history swords were often used as a secondary or tertiary weapon to the polearm

https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/2yg9hm/is_it_true_that_swords_were_generally_secondary/

Imu clearly demonstrates a similar order of weapon priority, with Nemesis being used as a secondary attack, similar to Kizaru's "Ame no Murakamo Sword". It is worth noting that whilst Imu falls into the category of "swordsman", he isn't primarily such and is more considered the Devil Fruit user in this circumstance, similar to how the community view Aokiji and Borsalino. This topic has been previously discussed on OPPS.

https://www.reddit.com/r/OnePiecePowerScaling/comments/147fiui/is_kizaru_a_swordsman/

There are three conclusions we can draw here, either

Option A: Imu is a swordsman and Mihawk is somehow stronger than Imu (personally I don't think this makes sense where we're currently at in the story but it is indeed the stance that some have decided to take)

Option B: Imu is not a swordsman, and Mihawk retains his title as the World's Strongest Swordsman.

Option C: Imu is a swordsman, and since he is clearly or most likely stronger than Mihawk. Mihawk's title of the World's Strongest Swordsman should not be considered valid despite the evidence that draws people to that conclusion.

For people who choose Option C, it is worth noting that Oda has chose to manipulate what has been said in the databooks and the narrator (for example, Sabo's death in the databooks and Roger's name in the narrator boxes) in order to conceal key plot points.

All of these conclusions can be argued with solid evidence, though A remains inconclusive as we're yet to see more from Imu or anything from Mihawk outside of titles.

My personal pick here is option B, but what do you all think? Difficult topic to discuss...

Yamato Vs King:

Since this is an actual matchup post I want to look at it from an angle of statistics and then use this as supporting evidence as to why Yamato beats King in a 1v1.

Stat breakdown:

Strength/Speed: Yamato was able to hold her own (whilst coming out of it injured) in a clash with Thunder Bagua, one of Kaido (who was in hybrid form)’s strongest and fastest attacks. This in itself is a crazy strength/speed feat in Yamato’s favour, since she was able to inflict an attack so strong and with a similar speed to the Thunder Bagua which has oftentimes been used by Kaido as a speedblitz. Yamato was also able to pin Ulti down with one hit from her Bagua - this hit was to Ulti’s head, the area where Ulti has specialised Armament Haki usage. In terms of raw physical strength, King doesn’t have a lot of supporting evidence aside from clashing with some of Sanji’s kicks and overpowering Zoro.

The clash in question

An example of Thunder Bagua being used as a speedblitz

\"High fly ball into the right field, SHE IS GONEEEEEEE\"

As well as the Bagua clash, Yamato exhibits feats that arguably put her even above King’s Flames Off mode. For example, Yamato’s Shinsoku Hakujaku (an attack she used whilst injured and in base, might I add) was able to land at the same speed as one of Luffy’s Jet Culverins. She was also able to react to one of Kaido’s Vajra Arrows, which are known to be one of the most absurdly fast attacks in his arsenal (she did get overpowered by it after a struggle, but that’s to be expected from Kaido).

Shinsoku Hakujaku

Better luck next time... hey you did a good enough job that I'm mentioning it though

Aside from the knowledge of Flames Off mode, explicit speed feats are lacking for King aside from being able to give Zoro some trouble (though Zoro's main observation from Flames Off was that he could now deal damage to King). In Flames On mode, it has been made clear (I've added Zoro's Egghead panel for reference further below) that Lunarians prioritise defence, losing the speed that they have access to in Flames Off mode.

IQ/BIQ: Since Yamato’s imprisonment on Onigashima as Kaido’s daughter, Yamato underwent years of torturous imprisonment beneath the Beast Pirates which allowed her to develop ideas on combat tactics effectively. King on the other hand has a very prominent IQ antifeat against him during his fight with Zoro, choosing to turn off his near-invincible Flames On mode when Zoro explicitly said and appeared to be at his limit. He continuously risked taking damage against Zoro even after he had been hit several times in Flames off mode, and this level of recklessness was a large factor that turned in Zoro’s favour in that fight.

Kaido bro you rich as hell just pay child support

Thank you, random Reddit user, for providing the helpful pointer. Flames Off for some reason

Endurance/Stamina/Durability: Flames On mode King has access to the incredible innate Lunarian durability. However, this is greatly reduced in Flames Off mode. Yamato’s feats in this category shouldn’t be overlooked, however, and the Onigashima fight is arguably a higher level feat in this sense: clashing with a fighter of one of the highest tiers, tanking ACoC attacks and still having enough stamina to stop the bombs in Onigashima from detonating, travelling through warfare from the rooftop to the deepest floor. In addition, it is worth noting that Yamato underwent serious stamina training as a child, fighting and training endlessly with Seastone handcuffs and undergoing extreme survival tests. Throughout the entire raid, despite fighting multiple opponents and endlessly playing a vital role, Yamato didn’t reach her stamina threshold once.

I suppose I'll have to address this statement from Zoro... whilst he has experience against Lunarians, King himself will know his own body better. Hence, him blocking and dodging Zoro's later attacks DOES mean something. Also note the use of \"basically\" here.

https://www.reddit.com/r/OnePiece/comments/ved031/every_single_attack_yamato_received_since_the/ This is a very helpful post that shows the sheer extent of Yamato's endurance by compiling all of the attacks Yamato sustained.

Devil Fruit: Yamato’s Devil Fruit also completely outmatches King’s as a Mythical Zoan to King’s Ancient Zoan. Yamato’s access to ice-based powers allow her to add more to her combat arsenal including creating an ice shield capable of withstanding explosive attacks. The ice powers also allow Yamato to fight effectively (not saying one counters the other here) against King’s Lunarian fire based attacks.

Aight bucko I might be arguing for you but you sure ash ain't THE GOAT FROZONE, DON'T STEAL HIS FLOW

Haki: Whilst King only has confirmed Armament and Observation Haki, neither of which have been confirmed to be advanced, Yamato possesses all 3 types of Haki. Not just that, however, but her Conqueror’s Haki has been clearly indicated to be an advanced form! King on the other hand tends to use Armament in conjunction with Flames On.

https://preview.redd.it/udrl6pkgybzg1.png?width=492&format=png&auto=webp&s=ab14be297159ba5d12924c14f331a1c7dffb0b2f

AP: For Yamato, I am going to mention the Ulti feat once again. Yamato was able to knock her out with a singular attack whilst in base. In addition, against a naturally durable Kaido she was able to slam him into the ground using Hallowed Glacier Slash, an attack that wasn’t shown to have any indication of using Conqueror’s.

Nothing like a bonk on the head

I’m not going to dress down King’s AP in any way here; it’s simply very good. However, Yamato can work around some of his best moves.

As I stated in the Devil Fruit section, Yamato’s defensive ice abilities can fare well against King’s most powerful fire-based attacks. As for the “speed is weight” type of hits that undeniably come with King’s moves, Yamato’s reaction time should be enough for her to evade King’s attacks, and on top of this if she counterstrikes, King is instantly more vulnerable if in speed form.

STAT CONCLUSION

It’s clear through this stat breakdown that Yamato has superior combat abilities capable of working against characters that are tiers higher than King himself. The obstacle for Yamato in this battle and what makes the matchup more difficult is King’s Lunarian abilities.

How Yamato would go about beating King:

I think it’s important that once the stats are taken into consideration, we talk about how Yamato actually goes about winning to reinforce the take.

From the King vs Zoro fight, we get a very clear implication that Flames On has a very particular weakness in Advanced Conqueror’s Haki. This is supported by the fact that King only started dodging and blocking Zoro’s attacks when he began leaking Advanced Conqueror’s, before eventually switching to flames off mode.

Flames were on, yet he's blocking?

This would also align with the inherent nature of aCoC to bypass durability and do legitimate internal damage. Since Yamato has showcased a great usage and control over their own advanced Conqueror’s, attaining more control than Zoro (as shown through the conversation he had with Gaban and Luffy on Elbaf) In this instance, regardless of flames on or flames off, Yamato would be able to do damage to King.

Whoopsies

But let’s entertain the argument that aCoC cannot bypass the flames on ability. What then? How does Yamato beat King?

The answer has already been presented to us clearly through King vs Zoro, and that’s effective combat exposure. Zoro was able to force King into a situation where King was no longer using flames on. Despite the fact that Zoro had just unlocked Advanced Conqueror’s Haki, King deactivated the absolute durability of flames on and made himself instantly vulnerable. Now if this doesn’t mean that aCoC bypasses that ability, then the only other conclusion that we can draw from this is that neither King’s battle IQ nor his Lunarian ability mastery is enough to maintain and manage flames on effectively. Hence, like Zoro did, Yamato can just wait tactically for the flames to be extinguished.

I think it's a point worth raising that it's highly likely that there is a time limit on Lunarian abilities, as mentioned by Shaka on Egghead. If this is true, Yamato might be able to stall King, though take this point with a grain of salt. I am just adding this to prove that Lunarian invincibility has limitations.

No such thing as a dying flame?

So on the subject of the Flames On ability, the choice is either between Yamato being able to bypass it with the added difficulty of using advanced Conqueror’s Haki, or that King simply lacks the mastery to use flames on to engineer a victory.

Depending on which route you have chosen to believe out of the two presented choices, Yamato can either overcome King's Flames On mode with her Haki, using attacks of high power and speed to defeat him, or she can be tactical by stalling King to the point where he deactivates Flame On, providing valuable openings where she can deal serious damage.

OVERALL CONCLUSION

Yamato has the combat ability, superior Haki and the better individual stat feats across the board, showing ample capability of fighting and stalling one of the strongest top tiers. King on the other hand is widely considered to have poor management over the Lunarian abilities that could potentially give Yamato some trouble, whilst also lacking in the Conqueror's department. Whilst a potentially high difficulty matchup, Yamato simply outmatches King in most aspects whilst King's battle intelligence lets him down.

I realise the gravity of what has occurred here and that in most normal instances, it would be included. However, recently what people have wanted more as a pose to the summary of the drama is for it to be resolved and forgotten about.

It's a sensitive topic for some users in the sub, and I don't want to cause any detriment to anyone at the result of what is said, nor remind everyone of such a stressful event.

It feels like a question that needs to be asked. The goal of the newspaper is to focus on in-sub news, powerscaling powerscalers, making people feel included and for it to be a fun thing that releases every couple of weeks. This subject feels against some of those principles. So I'm putting it out to you all. Whatever you decide shall be what I do.

So I was NOT expecting to have this done so quickly.... Expect a usual biweekly schedule.

As always, suggestions for interview questions and newspaper improvements are always welcome! Hope you enjoy this latest issue

Introduction:

Many have pushed Trafalgar Law above the High Commander tiers, and some have even argued that he has the power to be an admiral if he were in the Navy. However, there is a lot of information that people forget about, and misconceptions that lead to Law upscales, that users of OPPS fail to notice. In some instances, it’s more than fair to say that Law has become an overrated character.

\"Law is Admiral level\"

POINT 1: Law is over-reliant on his Devil Fruit and his physical stats do not compare well to top tiers and people within the High Commander Tiers

I want to start with the fact that whilst Law has an incredible Devil Fruit at his disposal, he has grown to become too reliant on using it in fights and this has neglected his physical statistics. For example, it is a well known fact that Awakened Devil fruits significantly drain the user’s stamina, as Law himself confirms in Wano.

Law's Awakened Ope Ope drains his stamina

This forces Law into situations where he constantly has to manage his energy in order to be able to take the physical toll of using another Devil Fruit technique, and we have seen this numerous times in his battles

Law is forced into stamina management, leading to sacrifices

Whilst in terms of endurance Law is able to keep up with his peers, his durability has been consistently overrated by the community. To prove this, I need to dismantle the common argument used in Law’s favour in terms of durability, which is “Law tanked a Thunder Bagua”.

Answer: he didn't fully tank it, look at his sword

Ooh pretty coloured manga version (sorry Animator don't kill me)

First of all, what we need to understand is that Law didn’t “tank” these attacks in the traditional sense of standing there and taking the blow. Law took damage and was forced to recover. In addition, people have missed that in the panel where Law gets hit with Thunder Bagua, we can clearly see that Law has his sword held up in order to soften the blow of the attack.

We’re here now, so why not throw in the fact that Law lacks any strength feats of note whatsoever so regardless of matchups, whoever he is drawn against is pretty much guaranteed to always have physical strength over Law. It’s worth adding that other characters that the community believe share a similar level of power to Law, such as Marco, Yamato and Eustass Kid all have superior physical feats.

In terms of Haki, unlike some of his fellow High Commander Level counterparts and even some who are tiers below him, Law lacks any type of advanced Haki, whilst he does possess all 3 types. This lack of refinement especially in the armament department is what seals a fatal blow against Law in many of his battles

You doing okay, buddy?

This apparently generated some crazy slander when the chapter dropped

Even though Law is absolutely stronger than he was in Dressrosa, this context against Doflamingo still applies. He used his df in an assasin type manner (Gamma Knife), and this fighting style was punished.

So in stat comparisons, Law only really has a chance at getting BIQ, speed, DF mastery and Hax.

Law himself has implied through his fighting technique that he lacks proficient physical stats, since every attack he uses has the intention of being a lethal or even fatal blow, serving as more of an assassin type character who strikes when the time is right, which leads me quite nicely onto my next point:

POINT 2- Law is better served as a support type character and cannot be on his best form in 1v1 situations.

A lot of powerscaling, in fact I’d say the vast majority of it, has been put down to 1v1 matchups between two characters. But the issue with Law in this instance is that he is much better suited to fighting in a group as his support heals his allies whilst his offensive power is better for assassin-type strikes (as I mentioned earlier) and for catching people off guard. In a 1v1 you’re forced into a battle on your own, so Law’s battle style isn’t very fitting in this instance. An example of this is his fight with Blackbeard, which I will discuss further later in the post.

Some of the combatants placed in tiers above, in fact even below Law, possess Advanced Conqueror’s Haki or regular Conqueror’s Haki. And as we well know, Haki is able to negate the effects of devil fruits.

Law uses Haki to counter Doc Q's attack

So if Law happens to come across a person who possesses Conqueror’s Haki, his Devil Fruit becomes way more difficult to utilise effectively. This combined with his other stats that are lacking in comparison to his AP and his Devil Fruit mastery is what tends to let Law down in a lot of his fights.

What this has to do with people overrating Law is that because of a weakness in physicals and Haki being a natural counter to devil fruit abilities, Law is instantly put in a difficult matchup against anyone who possesses Conqueror’s. Hence, there is an added level of difficulty in each hypothetical fight with a Conqueror’s user that is often overlooked within the community.

POINT 3: ANALYSING LAW VS BLACKBEARD AND WHY THE DIFFICULTY IS LOWER THAN MANY THINK

A very large contribution as to why people overrate Law across the sub is the fact that people believe that the Law vs Blackbeard fight. So what I’m going to do is make a clear timeline of events, bring in arguments for a lower difficulty match and make counterarguments against some of the points people use in favour of a higher difficulty match.

Blackbeard's initial recklessness

As the fight ensues in chapter 1064, Law uses a Remote Room on Blackbeard whilst he is flying in on Stronger.Blackbeard’s initial carelessness when it comes to Law’s Devil Fruit has now put him in a difficult position, as he didn’t know that Law could now apply rooms from range.

Blackbeard then uses a Quake Crash and the panels clearly show lightning around Blackbeard’s fists, indicating a usage of Advanced Conqueror’s Haki which is further reinforced by the red colouring of said lighting in the coloured manga and the anime.

Watching ts for the first time was incredible

The Advanced Conquerors about Blackbeard’s fist in the top right corner of the page would also explain why Blackbeard was unaffected by Law’s Amputate.

Law's Re-Room falls apart

On the very next page, in addition, Law’s Re-Room is shown falling apart, and there’s several possibilities as to why this could have happened: an ACoC infused Gura punch broke the Room, or the surrounding quake effects of Blackbeard’s devil fruit forced Law to deactivate the Room. Either way, Blackbeard found a way to force a deactivation of Law’s Room here. I would also like to add that in this case Law had just entered the fight, so to say that he deactivated the Room to conserve stamina is disingenuous.

Shock Wille

Once Blackbeard arrives on the ground, Law hits him with a Shock Wille, one of Law’s strongest attacks in terms of AP. Van Augur criticises his captain for entering the battle so carelessly, leading us to believe that a large reason why Blackbeard had taken the damage in that case was due to a lack of preparation or forethought.

However even then, Blackbeard is seen laughing and gets back on his feet the very next page.

Blackbeard quickly recovers despite taking 2x damage due to the Yami Yami

They then engage in a clash, Law’s extended sword against one of Blackbeard’s quake punches. In the very next panel, Law looks visibly surprised and worried when Blackbeard begins to use the Yami Yami no Mi, a natural counter to all devil fruit abilities.

Black Vortex

This is the last we see of the fight until Chapter 1081, where we see the conclusion. Blackbeard remains standing in victory, seeming tired yet not exhausted by the encounter. Both Law and Bepo are lying in defeat, with Law looking close to death’s door. Blackbeard had also been able to coordinate the sinking of the Polar Tang. It is at this point where Bepo uses his Sulong form and manages to escape with Law, with the narrator describing the Heart Pirates as “soundly defeated”, conducting a “humiliating retreat”.

BB has coordinated the destruction of the Polar Tang and has been able to defeat Law. He remains standing.

BEPO MY GOAT TO THE RESCUEEEEEE

\"High Diff fight\" referred to as \"soundly defeated\" in a \"humiliating retreat\"...hmmm

Now I shall bring in arguments for a lower difficulty match. First I want to bring up the likelihood that the initial Shock Wille was the most significant amount of damage Blackbeard had taken in that fight, which you can see by looking at these two panels, taken from 1064 and 1081, side by side.

1064 vs 1081. Safe to say that Law didn't manage to do much more

This leads us to believe that while the fight was offscreened, Law failed to land any significant blows at all on Blackbeard in that timeframe. To summarise bits of what I said during the timeline of the fight, as per statements from both Van Augur and Blackbeard, it is quite clear that Blackbeard only suffered that initial damage due to Blackbeard’s negligent approach to the fight.

A point of much discussion that is used in favour of a higher difficulty matchup is the time in which the battle occurred, with many arguing that it took hours for Blackbeard to defeat Law.
The evidence they use to support this is the use of “meanwhile” when it cuts back to Egghead during chapter 1064.

Evidence for the defendant

However, the use of “meanwhile” here only has the implication that the events on Winner Island and Egghead are occurring at the same time, not that the chapters between 1064 and 1081 create an exact timeframe of Blackbeard and Law’s battle.

If you disagree, here’s an analogy that should explain it well.

“I drove from my remote home village to the city. Meanwhile, my friend went to buy groceries”.

It’s clear that the events of the drive will take longer than buying groceries. The meanwhile is a clear indication that the two events are occurring at the same time, but never does it imply that the two events finished at the same time. Also, driving from a remote village to a city would obviously take hours, which buying groceries certainly doesn't. Hope this helps!

Another piece of evidence used to suggest a higher difficulty fight is that in the Vivre Card, the fight is referred to as a “fierce battle”.

Defendant's evidence no 2 (doesn't really help their case...) The timeframe of said \"struggle\" partially determines the difficulty, all this really proves is that the fight wasn't a no diff which was obvious already

I just want to point out that neither of these words suggest a prolonged fight, as per their definitions.

https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/battle

https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/fierce

Referring to these definitions, we can see that the fight was indeed a fierce battle. It was a physically violent fight between armed forces, after all. But this doesn’t suggest at all that the fight had a high difficulty. If you think about it, Shanks vs Kidd falls under this very same definition, and that fight is widely considered to be lower difficulty.

This means that there is no conclusive evidence outside of the fight itself that implies that the fight took hours. In fact, if we look within the fight itself there are only implications that the fight took a very short amount of time when we take in the fact that the Polar Tang had only just departed from Winner Island before being sunk as well as the lack of damage Blackbeard had taken. A likely (unconfirmed, just an estimation) conclusion to this battle was that Law became very easy to put down after his Devil Fruit abilities had been nullified.

Contrary to popular belief on OPPS,(chat I've been nerfed and Reddit won't give me any more photos, observe the comments) the evidence and counterarguments presented here show us that the fight could not have been anything higher than a mid difficulty.

POINT 4: Law is overrated within the One Piece World itself

I’m going to keep this point brief, since you can probably guess what’s coming. Despite Luffy’s efforts against Kaido in Wano, Law and Kidd received the same 3,000,000,000 bounty posters.(finna be another comment for this one) This has been widely regarded to be an in-verse overrating considering Gear 5’s vastly superior abilities. A large factor in his high bounty may be down to the value of the Ope Ope no Mi.

POINT 5: Brief words on Kid vs Law, and the fight in Wano

Many users on OPPS take Kid and Law against Big Mom to be an outright victory, which is a common inaccuracy. The fight was clearly won by a ringout, where Kid and Law were able to coordinate an attack that knocked Big Mom into a pool of lava which ultimately resulted in her demise. This was down to superior battle IQ from the pair and was also down to environmental factors. People have used “Kid and Law beat Big Mom” to upscale them when in actuality it should be “Kid and Law were able to outsmart Big Mom”. (UUUUUGH let me have more photos bro imma js make a thread atp)

I want to clarify that both Kid and Law were absolutely essential in the fight. That is absolutely undeniable. However, there are clear roles that were played in this 2v1.  Kidd served as the tank in this battle, knocking Big Mom around with large attacks and taking the majority of the damage, whilst Law served as the strategist, striking with high AP attacks, breaking Big Mom’s bones with his Devil Fruit abilities.  I think it’s also worth noting that Kid had already left the rooftop to fight Big Mom well before Law’s arrival in Chapter 1030, and there is a clear signal that Kid had already been fighting her for “a few dozen minutes”(this post explains that well:

https://www.reddit.com/r/OnePiecePowerScaling/comments/wrf8c7/kid_fought_big_mom_alone_for_at_least_24_minutes/ )

I’m not going to do a full timeline like I did against Blackbeard as this fight spanned multiple chapters and it would take way too long!

What I’m really getting at here is reinforcing my earlier point that Law is too reliant on his Devil Fruit in battles, and Law and Kid vs Big Mom is a prime example of this. Kid clearly had to do more physical work, take more hits and be more durable whereas Law waited his turn for appropriate times to strike.

Many across OPPS consider Kid and Law to be equals, or even have Law higher than Kid (it's a pretty divisive topic on OPPS) but the fight against Big Mom goes to show that they aren’t. Kid clearly showed himself to have superior physical skills to Law whilst having achieved a similar level of fruit mastery, so if one were to be put above the other, it definitely should be Kid.

CONCLUSION:

There are varying factors that cause Law to be overrated within the community that include his fight with Blackbeard, people putting him automatically relative to Kidd, and small misconceptions that contribute to a larger overall overrating.
