Title: Welcome! I built a Free VR Tool to help my partner recover from two strokes. Here is our story, the science behind it, and the download links.
Hi everyone, welcome to r/StrokeVRTraining!
My name is Jose. I created this community to share a project that is very close to my heart, and I hope it can help you or your loved ones as much as it is helping us.
📖 The Story: Why I built this This project is based on a mix of verified Mirror Therapy principles and our own direct experience with hospital-grade technology.
In 2023, my partner suffered two strokes caused by an AVM (Arteriovenous Malformation), resulting in right-side hemiparesis and aphasia.
- The First Stroke: After her first stroke, she was treated in a specialized hospital that used a robotic/virtual rehabilitation system called 'Tyromotion Amadeo'. The results were incredible. The combination of physical movement and immersive virtual feedback worked very fast. In just 5 months, she was walking and moving her arm perfectly.
- The Second Stroke: Unfortunately, she suffered a second bleed, which was much more traumatic. She spent 4 months in a coma, the brain injuries were more severe, and we had to move to a different region to be closer to our families for support.
🛑 The Problem: Losing Access In our new location, the rehabilitation centers did not have advanced equipment like the 'Amadeo'. They only had a traditional method: Mirror Therapy.
I built her a physical wooden mirror box myself so she could practice at home. While the physical box helped, I noticed it wasn't as effective as the immersive virtual machine she had used before. I spoke with her neurologists and rehab specialists, and they confirmed that immersive technology is a major advance in neuroplasticity science, but they simply didn't have the budget for that kind of machinery.
💡 The Solution That was the spark. I realized that while I couldn't build a robot, I could use code to replicate that immersive visual feedback using something everyone has: a smartphone.
I basically took the clinical concept of the 'Mirror Box' and upgraded it with the immersion of VR to mimic the effectiveness of the professional machines we lost access to.
❤️ A Holistic Approach I want to be very clear: this app is not a magic cure. It is a powerful tool, but it is just one part of our daily battle. My partner works incredibly hard every day doing speech therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and cognitive therapy. We use this VR tool as a complement to boost her neuroplasticity training at home.
🛡️ Why I am sharing this for Free I built this for her, but I know thousands of families are in the same situation—unable to afford expensive medical tech. That’s why I decided to release it:
- 100% Free & Non-Commercial: I don't want to make money from your health.
- Source Available: The code is public so you can verify it is safe.
- Private: No login required. No data collection.
- Accessible: Works on iOS, Android, and Web with cheap $10 VR goggles.
