When playing an open chord that has unplayed strings such as D or C is it better practise to train to miss the strings on both up and down strums or just reach over and mute with your thumb.

I wasn't able to find any answers anywhere. I'm sure it's not that big of a deal I just don't wanna get caught up with bad practises down the line. I'm self taught aswell.
