Hey everyone, sharing this so others don’t get caught out like I did today.
I showed up for my driving test fully prepared, but wasn’t allowed to proceed. I had taken out insurance on a third-party car using my International Driving Permit (IDP), thinking that would be fine.
However, the tester explained that for the driving test, the insurance must specifically be in place using your Irish learner permit, not an IDP. Because of that, they couldn’t allow me to continue with the test.
I did try to explain my situation, but they said they had to follow the rules strictly, so the test was cancelled and I now have to rebook.
Just a heads up—if you’re using someone else’s car, make sure your insurance is explicitly set up under your learner permit, not an IDP or anything else.
Really frustrating experience, but hopefully this helps someone avoid the same mistake.
