Bought a semi in Toronto last year with a shared side walkway (35 inches wide) that both houses use for backyard access.
Our neighbours keep all of their garbage/recycling bins in the walkway, which makes it very difficult to pass through. I’m currently pregnant with my second child, and a stroller won’t fit. I also need access to storage under my front steps, but I have to move all four of their bins every time to get in.
On top of that, their tenants sometimes leave furniture in the walkway, which makes it feel unsafe—especially with a young child.
I’ve asked them to keep the space clear, but they’ve been dismissive and want to “discuss it next month.”
At this point, I’m wondering:
Is blocking a shared walkway like this a fire or bylaw issue in Toronto?
Do I have any right to insist the space be kept clear?
What would you do in this situation?
