This will be my third season of cannabis outdoors in Central Ohio. Still a noob in the weed world, but I've been gardening for a long time. Cannabis isn't all that different from growing anything else. Here's a few things that might help if you're just getting started.
There's a lot of ways to garden. Don't get too hung up on complicated methods or advice. Start simple.
Start with good genetics. Seeds are easy and make for strong plants. Feminized photoperiod seeds. Don't mess with autos your first time around, and no strains with a really long flowering time either. Just start them in soil or seed starter trays outside. There's no need to start inside, and there's no need to rush. Wait until it's reasonably warm out. Let your seedlings get strong in a small starter pot or solo cup with drainage holes and a simple starter soil.
Don't overwater the plants, and let those roots fill your little container. Just try to get everything in the ground by sometime in June. Even July is fine if you get a late start or experience problems.
No offense to those who do, but I don't like growing in containers. Containers are overrated, less forgiving, and they keep your plants from connecting directly to the earth. Raised beds are great, or straight into the ground. Dig a nice chunk out and make a little circular bed if you go this route. Just use a simple garden soil, or amend the dirt you have with compost and a little organic fertilizer. I use a cup of local 5-4-5, and you can add more later if you want. Leave plenty of room between plants, and put them where they will get as much sun as possible.
One optional thing that I will mention. A wettable mycorrhizae powder added to your watering really helps boost your plant's health and nutrient uptake. I use this throughout the life cycle, but especially in the very beginning when those first roots are getting started.
You can do this! Be positive, and don't worry. Shit happens, so grow a little extra. You got this. Here's hoping this gets you off to a good start!
