Looking for some practical advice -
My wife and I just bought a house built in the 70s which needs a lot of work. Because we are delaying moving in until renovations wrap up - I decided to do some of the larger more involved stuff first while no one was living there. That included removing all the popcorn ceilings on the first floor (around 1500 sq ft including all bedrooms, kitchen, and living spaces). It was only after talking with a different contractor who was going to be taking out a wall and after the ceiling was done that I even learned that popcorn ceilings could contain asbestos.
I contacted the painting company who did the popcorn removal and they said they didn’t do a test but that their process doesn’t change much since they would still wet it all before scraping and their crew wears protective gear and they cover the walls and floors before work begins.
I ordered an asbestos test done and used some of the popcorn ceiling left in a linen closet that wasn’t removed to test and it came back 2% chrysotile.
I was worried about exposure because I have been working from the new house (upstairs) and was there while all of that work downstairs was happening. I also definitely tracked some of the white stuff and dust upstairs just walking in And out going upstairs multiple times a day.
After reading some of the other posts here - I feel better about my exposure being minimal, but my question is about the future. Before my wife and kids move in to the house - the floors downstairs will be replaced, and virtually all of the walls in every room are going to be painted. Apart from making sure to wash the floors upstairs where I’ve tracked that stuff and covering up the ceiling in the linen closet where there is still popcorn - is there anything else I should do to ensure my family’s safety?
